What does getting dental implants involve?
The process of getting implants requires a number of visits over several months.
X-rays and impressions (molds) are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. While the area is numb, the implant will be surgically placed into the bone and allowed to heal and integrate itself onto the bone for three months. The dentist will then choose one of several types of abutments to attach to the implant body. This "post" will support the artificial tooth and must be of proper length and angulation. An impression of this post and surrounding teeth will sent to a dental lab. Once the artificial tooth with proper size and color is fabricated and returned to the dentist final adjustments are made before attaching the tooth permanently in place. The look, feel and performance of this restoration will come close to a natural tooth.
